Smelting Saves Electronics from the Landfill

Smelting: Recycling We Urgently Need

Electronics go out of style faster than clothes these days. Americans throw out more than 350,000 cell phones and 130,000 computers every day, according to Time. E-waste piles up and often gets shipped to poor countries where it causes serious environmental and health problems.

Fortunately, there is an alternative to letting e-waste accumulate and leach dangerous chemicals into the surrounding soil and water. In this video, Michael Pittman from 2nd Solutions explains to Sierra Club Green Home how smelting makes it possible to recycle old electronics.

You can also learn about batteries’ eco afterlife, or find places to recycle your cell phone safely and sustainably.
