Green Renovation Tips

My wife and I are in the middle of the renovating a new townhome we purchased.  The major renovation is being done to the kitchen.  It used to be all formica so there was little we could save which was unfortunate, but we made all of our purchases with a focus on the air quality of our home and the sustainability of the products we bought.  Here’s a few tips for people from somebody who just went green:

  • Find a good store and contractor!  We wouldn’t have been successful without the help of the wonderful people at GreenMaker Supply in Chicago.  If you’re near Chicago, check them out.  If you’re not near Chicago, find a place that knows green.
  • Do your research.  Whether you’re building green or not, you need to know what you want.  Be very clear about your goals with your store.  We found they had creative solutions for everything.
  • Plan for it to take time.  Green is growing fast and many of the best retailers and contractors have backorders.  Don’t despair, the backlogs mean you found great stuff that everybody wants!  Just make sure your calendar is flexible enough that a longer wait time can work for you.

We’re still waiting on our countertops, but I’ll post again when the place is done with some cool pictures.
