Let me guess...John I. sells solatubes....we have had a skylight for
8 years and have never had to clean "dirt" or "soot" from it...and we
can see the clouds and sun! There is a place for both types of
skylights depending on the desires of the person. Traditional skylights
done right do NOT need maintenance!

Another point about Solatube Daylighting Systems. Skylights require much more maintenance on the outside. They tend to accumulate dirt, soot, etc.. A Solatube is maitenance Free.

Dont like the round design?. Here is a design tip. Recess the ceiling up an inch or so creating a square design and center the solatube in that recessed area. This will create more of a skylight look with all the benefits of a Solatube Daylighting System.

Don't forget insulated shades. These are often both cheaper and more effective than replacing your windows. A company I do consulting work for (windowquilt.com) markets a full perimeter seal shade that works amazingly well, and is especially effective on large windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors. I never heard of the low-e window issues with plants -- anybody know of this?

Since winter is coming soon, it's important to insulate your house, especially the areas around the windows. That being said, I absolutely love skylights. they are so pretty.

A quick response would be appreciated. We are in the process of purchasing new windows and were told that the enery rebate windows block a large percentage of uv rays. Good for furniture but told that they are not compable with plants. The plants would not receive enough uv rays. Is this true. I have a large number of houseplants and would hate to purchase the windows if the plants would be harmed.
