Regarding what greeniefroggie said about using soapy bathtub water for plants, doesn't that poison with plants? That's my one concern about using graywater for plants. I always heard the only way you can do that is if you use all 100% natural and organic products.

I really like these water-saving tips. Some things are so easy to do if people actually thought about it. Not using the toilet as a trash can is one that seems like a no-brainer, but people do it all the time!

Great post! Thanks.

I’ve been using a <a href="http://www.greenworks-energy.co.uk/showers-water-conservation.php" rel="nofollow">water conserving shower</a> from this site which has been mostly great.

An eighty-three year old couple living in Hogansville, Georgia, during the extended drought of the past 10 years have adopted these measures in order to water their large vegetable garden when outdoor watering was completely prohibited by the city:

Use a dishpan in the sink to collect all water from washing hands, vegetables, and dishes. Then pour out the "gray water" into a holding water barrel with a hose spout.

Close the drain off while taking a shower and then use a bucket to empty the tub of water and take it out to the outside water storage barrel.

Install "rain barrels" on all downspouts from the house and garage.

Connect the drain hose from the washing machine to an outside water storage barrel.

They were able to maintain a large thriving vegetable garden throughout the extremely dry summers of the past 10 years, and had some water for flowers too.

Their water saving tools were a plastic dishpan, a large plastic bucket, a watering can, rain barrels on gutter downspouts, drip irrigation hoses to connect to water barrels, and covered water storage barrels with a hose spout.

As all gardeners know, plants enjoy a little soapy water.
