[...] Take your food list from yesterday and calculate your carbon “foodprint.” Did you eat anything grown within 250 miles? Yes, broccolli was purchased from the farmers market as was the cheese How much non-organic meat and dairy did you consume? Consumed no meat but did consume olive butter and cheese How much packaged food did you buy? Packet of gum Choose five items from yesterday that were not produced locally and try swapping them out for items that are produced locally. Here are 10 economical steps for putting the right food on your table. [...]

Under the heading of recycle and compost there is no mention of bokashi buckets in this article, so I wonder if they are not available in the USA. I bought one about two years ago. It is a very solid bucket with a tight fitting lid. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. Any waste, including meat products can be added to this bin. Then a handful of special grains is thrown over the top. After a few weeks the whole bucketful is ready to dig into the garden. By this time all the meat, etc will have broken down enough to not cause rodent interest. It has very little smell, too, regardlless what is placed in the bucket.
The bucket must not be cleaned out with anything to destroy the bacteria present. It took about six months for these bacteria to build up sufficiently to work, but eventually it worked brilliantly.
Once I have a bucketful ready, I add it to containers, top with soil, leave a while then plant. Works a treat.
These containers are used to grow everything and anything, from large plants like dwarf fruit trees, blueberries, rhubarb to vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuces, herbs, etc.
I have too many fruit trees in my garden to grow vegetables in the ground, so containers are great. We eat home grown fruit every day of the year, and have just a normal suburban back yard.

It's such a common belief that organic and healthy food is more expensive than crappy food. That may be the case for some people, but I make all my meals myself at home and I rarely ever eat out. I eat all organic, plant-based food and my grocery bills are definitely not any more expensive than they used to be.

All great tips, especially the point about eating less meat. As the world becomes more affluent it has become increasingly apparent that this habit is not sustainable for a healthy planet.

Not only are processed foods bad for the environment, they are bad for your health. If you could only do one thing on this list, I would suggest getting rid of processed foods.
