Nice one, Relying on air leaks is a poor way to get healthy air in our home because they often bring in musty air from crawl spaces and basements. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. I really appreciate your wonderful knowledge. Thanks for taking the time for sharing this article; it was excellent and very informative. I very much appreciated your knowledge through your articles on certain things.

To address RC's very important concern about healthy indoor air:

Relying on air leaks is a poor way to get healthy air in your home because they often bring in musty air from crawl spaces and basements.

Some of the best ways to get clean indoor air are:
- Keep toxic products out of your house (if you have to keep them, put them in a detached garage or shed)
- Remove your shoes indoors (they track in pesticides, oil, and other things from the street)
- Reduce the amount of carpet in your house, which acts like a big sponge (a lightly damp mop on solid surface floors will remove exponentially more pollutants than a vacuum on a carpet)

So definitely seal those leaks. For those of us in old leaky homes it would be extremely difficult to ever patch up enough leaks to cause a ventilation problem anyway. If you need more fresh air indoors, use windows or a fan so you can control how much air you get and where it's coming from.

All very good points and I hope an equally good follow-up article will discuss the health problems associated with sealing up a house so that there isn't an exchange of fresh air from the outside.

I have seen in a couple of places lately the statistic saying the environment indoors in the average house is much more polluted that the outside air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared indoor air quality as one of the top five environmental risks to public health (Building Change, By Gail Vittori, From NATURAL HOME, Nov./Dec. 2003) and it may explain the upswing in asthma statistics. The average home in the U.S. has twice the airborne pollutants as outside.

Thanks, I appreciate the effort to put together a fine informative article.

What kind of sealer would you recommend for sealing window cracks, I don't want to replace all windows?
