Sorry, I had absolutely no idea how to phrase this question.
So, after I brush my teeth, I always rinse my mouth of the toothpaste by running my toothbrush under the water then brushing my teeth with just water until my mouth is rinsed.
Does this take away from the actual brushing? Am I just removing all the cleaning and protection that I just put on my teeth? Or does the toothpaste still “work its magic?” I only just thought of this this morning after brushing, and I got kind of worried that my entire life I’ve just been canceling all the cleaning I’ve done…. :(

Don’t worry, you phrased your question just right. your procedure is okay. a supplement help might come from a mouthwash to use after your procedure. protect your teeth. the Lord only gives you one set and they are forever yours.
I’ve been doing this for years, it never occurred to me that it might be bad. You are supposed to rinse your mouth after you brush, toothpaste isn’t meant to be swallowed, so I can’t imagine that using your toothbrush to rinse would be any worse than swishing water.
You have nothing to worry about. It’s the brushing itself that’s most important.
It’s fine to do this, just add flossing to the routine and you’ll have great dental hygiene.
i thought everyone did this. i usually rinse mine out with water too. you’re not supposed to swallow toothpaste so i’d rather not have a bunch left. and i don’t think that’s the point, anyhow. i think you’re supposed to get it all off.
Once you have brushed your teeth, you cannot undo the brushing. You are doing fine.
Haha, okay, thanks all. (Just to clear things up, I know you aren’t supposed to swallow the paste. :] I just wasn’t sure if it was better for your teeth to swish the toothpaste out with water instead of re-brushing with just water, but now I get it!)
I do that too. Makes it all really nice and clean.
My dentist has actually recommended that.

Not at all. As long as you are not brushing too hard, then having a second go-over will probably help loosen up any leftover plaque.
Actually, it helps with cleaning.
Lonelydragon is correct. also, never swallow toothpaste. it has glycol in it. an ingredient used in your cars antifreeze.
