10-15% efficient PV power plants produce electricity for approx. $0.30/kWh retail without subsidies but consume and emit nothing. 30-40% efficient coal power plants produce electricity for approx. $0.03/kWh wholesale with significant subsidies but not including environmental and health costs.

The best photovoltaic solar panels are about 15% efficient. The good news is that Silicon Valley has recently entered the market and will be chasing the remaining 85%. We should start seeing improvements in the next couple of years. You can buy small solar chargers for phones, etc at Radio Shack or Apple stores. They do a passable job. There are also things like solar backpacks which work well. But, solar is silent, clean, no moving parts, reliable, and fixes your electricity cost for the next 30 to 40 years...what's not to like? There is a Federal Tax Credit of 30% and many State incentives as well. Go to http://www.dsireusa.org/incentives/index.cfm?state=us to see all of these.

Solar still has a very long way to go, but fortunately it's making a start slowly but surely. If the govt. can put together better incentive packages or set some kind of standard, it would be amazing at how quickly we'd be producing more power and saving more money.

Yeah, solar panels aren't as effective as they can be yet. What about hydrogen fuel cells?
