Some states and utilities are offering incentives for solar water heating, in addition to the federal government tax breaks. Here's some info I found on a couple states -- wish my state offered some incentives, but NO! it doesn't.

For an example of a real family living with solar hot water (and loving it, especially in the summer) check out

www.solar-hot-water.org

We installed an evacuated tube system in 2008 and so far we've made back almost $900. I made this web site for other homeowners, so they can see what it's like to get solar installed, and what the typical paperwork is like (don't worry, it's not bad).

Solar Hot Water Systems (SHWS) rock! This is one of the biggest improvements to any home or business that takes a bite out of the energy bill and truly reduces CO2.

One TIP: Previous to our SHWS, we already replaced the electric hot water heater. Sizing for family/size of home/building is important. The replacement has the control panel with Vacation and three modes, lifetime warranty and is compatible with SHWS. You must disengage the Very Smart or HIGH EFFICIENCY mode to SMART mode when working in tandem with a SHWS-otherwise you won't get hot water during normal mode of operation.

One problem in using solar heat is that, using a tankless heater to bring the water up to final temp can cause a problem. I found that a 1.5 G/min shower head did not draw enough of the hot water to meet the minimum of 0.5 G/min of my tankless heater. So the shower would run cold as soon as all the hot water was out of the pipes. FIX: switch to a 2.5 G/Min shower head.
