Thanks Rumpole for your comments. I agree it is a less expensive way to go than solar electricity. In an ideal world, both systems will eventually be affordable. Did you get a chance to check out our Solar Water heater calculator as well? Go to this page, and check off "Hot Water" to draw down an estimate. http://sierraclubgreenhome.coolerplanet.com/. Let me know your thoughts. Best, Jennifer, Director of Sustainability
As great a solar PV is (electricity generated from solar panels), a significantly less expensive way to get into solar is by domestic hot water heating. We put up an evacuated tube system one year ago, and we're totally happy with it. Your savings depends on your water usage, but for our family of two adults and two kids, we saved up to about $50.00 per month on our electric bill by letting the sun preheat our water for us. It's a lot easier on the electric heating element in the tank to take the water from 100 degrees to 120 degrees than from 50 degrees to 120 degrees. You can see our performance data, and what it's like to have a system installed at solar-hot-water.org . I'm a homeowner, and I just wanted to get the word out to other homeowners. Solar domestic hot water should probably be most peoples first contact with active solar (as opposed to passive solar).
