I am trying to buy lumber to build a pergola structure for my front yard as a means of shading, and hopefully cooling, the house.

Yes, I would definitely look for FSC Certified Wood, SmartWood, and the Rainforest Alliance Certification when shopping for lumber. Another way to verify lumber from a manufacturer is to ask for the Chain of Custody certificate. Good luck and let me know what type of lumber you are pursuing.

Do you have any recommendations on buying lumber? Can I trust the "wood policy" of the big retailers? Should I be looking for FSC wood?
